    Basic Needs Emergency Housing Grant 

    To support Los Medanos College student basic needs and progress towards graduation, the Basic Needs Emergency Housing Grant program assists eligible students experiencing unexpected economic challenges with financial assistance in the form of a financial aid grant.

    Eligibility:  

    • Have an unexpected or extenuating financial challenge (i.e., Displaced and in need of assistance with housing costs, notice of eviction or utility cutoff)
    • Be a currently enrolled Los Medanos College student. (Emergency Housing Grants are available during the fall and spring semesters and only available during the summer months for students actively enrolled and taking Summer Session.)
    • Be able to document the financial crisis with third party verification.  
    • Be willing to work towards economic stability and receive support to improve financial, mental and physical sustainability.  
    • Complete the FAFSA, (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), CADAA (California Dream Act Application), or equivalent.  
    • Complete the application for CalFresh.
    • Be willing to pursue part-time employment and all other means of self-support, if currently unemployed and able to work.  

    Application:

    • Complete Basic Needs Application Form 
    • Schedule to meet with the Basic Needs Coordinator and/or Basic Needs Representative to review your application. 
    • Provide third party documentation of your financial crisis and/or the urgent financial situation. (i.e. Eviction Notice, Utility Bill, etc.)

    Rental Portfolio
    A rental portfolio can help you in obtaining an approval for housing sooner. Items to include: Pay stubs (past three months), letter of reference from current/former landlord and/or employer, Copy of Credit Report- You can obtain a free copy of your credit report each year from Annual Credit Report.     One Time Payment Assistance PG&E
    You may be eligible to enroll in a one-time payment assistance program to help you through a financial hardship. Use the link above to see if you qualify.

    Post Office Box 
    Students experiencing homelessness— including couch surfing or otherwise lacking a fixed/permanent place of living—can request a no-cost P.O. Box at their local Post Office so that they can receive mail. The student will need to have identification, or be known to the window clerk or Postmaster, or provide a verifiable point of contact (e.g., shelter, social services office, place of employment). A student will need to complete PS Form 1093 and submit it to their post office. Learn more at the USPS website.
