Guided Self-Placement

Alternatives to Taking the Placement Tests

About AB 705

AB 705 is a bill signed by the Governor on October 13, 2017.  The bill requires that a community college district or college maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one-year timeframe and use, in the placement of students into English and math courses, one or more of the following: high school coursework, high school grades, and high school grade point average.

Research shows that students’ overall high school performance measure by grade point average (GPA) is the strongest predictor of performance in college-level coursework.  With the newly enacted AB 705 legislation, students receive a placement from using either high school performance records or participate in a Guided Self-Placement process instead of our old assessment tests.  Assessment tests will no longer be administered as part of our assessment process.

For implementation by Fall 2019, California law AB705 represents a significant change in the way students are placed. Students may be eligible to enroll in transfer-level math or English classes, or transfer-level courses with additional support.  For more information about AB 705 go to https://assessment.cccco.edu/ab-705-implementation/.
