Astronomy

Welcome to the Astronomy Department

Astronomy is the study of the universe beyond Earth, exploring everything from the intricate details of our solar system to the vast structures of galaxies and beyond. In astronomy classes, students not only unravel the mysteries of stars, planets, and cosmic phenomena but also gain valuable insights into the natural laws that govern our own world. Astronomy connects to a wide range of real-world applications— from advancements in climate science to innovations in technology — and fosters a unique perspective on humanity’s place in the cosmos. Students gain foundational knowledge that can inspire a lifelong appreciation of the universe.

Los Medanos College has a planetarium and a telescope viewing area on top of its science building for night viewing.

Students looking at starsASTRO 10: Introduction to Astronomy has section in both Pittsburg and Brentwood as well as online. The Pittsburg section uses the aid of the Pittsburg planetarium.

ASTRO 11: Astronomy Laboratory  provides laboratory experience in astronomical observation. It involves the study of fundamental concepts of astronomy, including investigations of the moon, sun, planets and stars and offers practical experience in the use of telescopes and other tools.

ASTRO-010 and ASTRO-011, if both completed, meet the CSU lab science requirement.
