Social justice is the idea that all members of a society are entitled to equitable rights and opportunities. Social Justice Studies recognizes social inequalities and socialization — particularly regarding race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class — and works in its intersectional analysis toward creating a more equitable society.

   Using interdisciplinary and multi-method approaches to study, research, and activist work, such as evidenced within Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x and Indigenous cultures, Social Justice Studies challenges common sense notions, perceptions, and enactments of race, gender, sexuality, economics, Pedagogy, Law, government, and Consciousness itself. More specifically, the discipline analyzes injustices, such as how racism, sexism, and homophobia are manifested through discrimination, economic disparities, and violence. Furthermore, Social Justice Studies examines social policies that aim to alleviate injustices and create a more equitable society through the collaborative engagement of academic, local, and global communities.

  Social Justice Studies has three Associate Degrees for Transfer:

  • SJS ADT Chicana and Chicano Studies
  • SJS ADT LGBTQ+
