A’kilah Moore, Ed.D.,  Interim Vice President of Instruction

Pittsburg, Calif. – Los Medanos College is pleased to announce A’kilah Moore, Ed.D., as Interim Vice President of Instruction, effective Aug. 14. Dr. Moore steps in for Natalie Hannum, who retired July 30.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Moore to our leadership team,” President Pamela Ralston said. “Throughout her career, Dr. Moore served in college and community leadership roles, strengthening programs for student success and championing diversity and equity. Her experience will be instrumental to advancing LMC’s mission and vision.”

Moore most recently served as director of curriculum development and training for Youth UpRising, a nonprofit organization in East Oakland focused on increasing physical and mental well-being, community connection, educational attainment, and career achievement among underserved Bay Area youth. In this role, Dr. Moore developed career and education programs; wrote and managed grants and budgets; and hired, trained and evaluated facilitators and staff.

“It is a joy to be returning ‘home’ to LMC,” Moore said. “I am excited to be part of this new leadership team. I look forward to working with our incredible community to ensure equitable access and success for all students as we support them in achieving their educational and career goals.”

The Interim Vice President role is a homecoming of sorts for Dr. Moore. From 2002 to 2017, she taught mathematics and held numerous leadership roles, including serving as Mathematics Department chair, Academic Senate president, Umoja Scholars Program coordinator, interim dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and dean of Mathematics and Sciences. During her tenure at LMC, Dr. Moore was involved at the state and national level, providing presentations at the Strengthening Student Success Conference, American Educational Research Association, National College Access Network Conference, and the Umoja Summer Learning Institute. She served on the Umoja Community Board and was also a member of the advisory committee formed by the State Chancellor’s Office to establish formal partnerships with California Community Colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Moore holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Spelman College, a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics from Howard University, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Saint Mary’s College of California.
