Pittsburg, Calif. – Los Medanos College is pleased to invite students, employees and members of the community to celebrate Juneteenth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13. Festivities will be held in the Student Union at the Pittsburg campus, 2700 E. Leland Road.

“On this day, we celebrate our country’s vision for an equal and free America for formerly enslaved Black and African Americans,” President Pamela Ralston said. “At Los Medanos College, we are determined to carry this moment of jubilation through the year to motivate our efforts toward eliminating inequities and institutional racism.”

The celebration includes music, games and food.

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It celebrates the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the proclamation was issued.

“In the spirit of fostering a sense of community and promoting inclusivity, our Juneteenth Celebration will be a time for us to come together, reflect, and build community,” Interim Dean of Equity and Inclusion Rosa Armendariz said. “It will provide an opportunity for us to honor the rich history and cultural contributions of African Americans.”

The celebration is a collaboration by Los Medanos College BHM 365 Work Group and the offices of Equity & Inclusion and Student Life.
