Public Schools - University of California (UC)
Universities of California (UCs) are supported by our state of California and our public tax dollars- therefore California residents pay less to go to California public universities than those coming from outside of California to our schools. The UC's are California's primary academic research institutions.

California State Universities (CSUs or “State”) are supported by our state of California and our public tax dollars- therefore California residents pay less to go to California public universities than those coming from outside of California to our schools.
More about public California State Universities
HBCUs were founded during a historical time when schools were segregated and Black people were not allowed to attend Predominately White Institutions (PWIs). Although the majority of the students at HBCUs are Black, HBCUs are not exclusively for Black people (just as PWIs are not exclusively for White people although White students make up the majority of the population). Some HBCU's are private schools while others are public.
More about Historically Black Colleges & Universities
Any college/university that is not supported by public funding. The cost of going to school is generally much higher at private schools. Some private universities are non-profit and some are for-profit.
More about Private Schools
Any college/university, public or private, that is outside of California. Generally, public out-of-state institutions charge higher costs to students who are not from their state and do not contribute to their state taxes which help pay for the cost.
