Email Consultations

What Are Email Consultations?

Email Consultations provide students with an alternative way to receive feedback from a Reading & Writing Consultant when an in-person or Zoom appointment is not possible.

While email consultations can be a helpful option, CAS strongly encourages students to meet with a consultant in person or via Zoom whenever possible. Live consultations allow for discussion, questions, and immediate feedback, creating a more interactive and personalized learning experience.

Live Consultations vs. Email Consultations

Live Consultations (In Person or Zoom)

  • Real-time conversation with a consultant
  • Opportunity to ask questions and receive immediate feedback
  • Collaborative discussion about your ideas, writing, and reading assignments
  • Personalized guidance throughout the consultation

Email Consultations

  • Written feedback provided on your submitted document
  • Best for students who cannot attend a live consultation
  • Allows consultants to provide comments, suggestions, and revision guidance
  • Does not provide the same level of interaction, discussion, or immediate clarification as a live appointment

How to Submit an Email Consultation

Complete the form below and attach your paper as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx).

Please include:

  • Your name and LMC Student ID
  • Course name and instructor
  • Assignment prompt or directions
  • Any specific questions or concerns you would like addressed
  • You may highlight sections of your paper or include comments indicating specific areas where you would like assistance.

Please allow up to 3-5 business days for a response from the date of submission.

When Should I Submit My Paper for Review?

To receive the most meaningful feedback, we recommend submitting your paper for an email consultation at least one week before the assignment due date. This allows you time to review the consultant's comments, revise your work, ask follow-up questions, and seek additional support if needed.

Email consultations are not intended for last-minute paper reviews. Planning ahead will give you the opportunity to fully benefit from the feedback and strengthen your work before submission.

Tip: If your assignment is due within a few days, consider scheduling a live consultation (in person or via Zoom) for more immediate and interactive support.

What can I expect from an email consultation?

Our consultants provide writing coaching and guidance, rather than proofreading or editing papers for students.

When reviewing your work, consultants focus primarily on larger writing concerns, such as:

  • Understanding and responding to the assignment
  • Developing and supporting ideas
  • Thesis statements and focus
  • Organization and structure
  • Logic, clarity, and flow
  • Revision strategies
  • Consultants may also identify patterns in grammar, style, and writing conventions by highlighting areas that need attention.

For longer papers, grammar and style feedback is generally limited to the first two pages so students can learn to recognize and revise similar issues throughout the rest of their work.

To ensure meaningful feedback, please limit submissions to five pages or fewer. If your paper exceeds five pages, submit the section(s) where you would like the most assistance.

How will I receive feedback on my paper?

After reviewing your submission, the consultant will return your document with feedback using the Comments feature in Microsoft Word. Comments may appear in the margins or within the body of your paper and are intended to guide your revision process.

To receive the most targeted feedback, you are encouraged to highlight sections of your paper or add comments identifying areas where you would like assistance, such as your thesis statement, organization, use of evidence, or overall clarity.

Feedback & Revisions

To make the most of your consultation, we encourage you to:

  • Review the consultant's comments and respond to any questions or suggestions provided.
  • Revise your paper using the feedback and recommendations received.
  • If time permits, consider scheduling a follow-up consultation or submitting a revised draft for additional feedback.
