Softball News

This page is dedicated to successes of past and present student athletes of Los Medanos Softball teams. These student athletes come together as a team, work and play as a unit, and then part ways along their pathway to life. I will briefly "introduce" the players and use excerpts in the student athletes' own words, as they describe their new challenges and adventures.

Shaylyne Siino
Shaylyne Siino, Bay Valley Conference 2018 Most Valuable Player

Shaylyne Siino

Shaylyne Siino may be the first LMC Softball player to ever win the Bay Valley Conference Player of the Year Award.

The Pittsburg High graduate earned it for her 2017 effort as a first baseman and pitcher.  Shay starred offensively with a .438 batting average that included 6 doubles, 2 home runs and 14 RBI (runs batted in) in only 13 BVC games.  Boasting a great fastball, she was the runner up for the BVC Pitcher of the Year.  Defensively she committed only 1 error.

Off the field, Shay achieved a 4.0 GPA during our BVC season while working part time and being promoted to a management position within a large retail store.

Shay believes her success can also be attributed to one of her favorite quotes:
“Don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong.”

“ I’ve always though of myself as a good pitcher and hitter but starting at LMC the coaches have brought my talent to a whole new level.  I never thought I could achieve so much.”

“ I want to thank my family for all the support and pushing me to be the best I can be and I can’t wait to pursue my nursing career after I graduate from LMC.”

Jenna Leavitt

Jenna was a dominant pitcher with a fierce competitive nature. A Unanimous First Team Selection to the Bay Valley Conference (BVC) team, Jen had numerous no-hit games and 1 perfect pitch game to spark a successful comeback by the LMC program. Jen was also an All State Academic Award winner, leaving LMC with at least a 3.5 GPA.

"I have graduated from California State University, East Bay with a Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences. I am now working full-time for On-Site Health and Safety, running the customer service department. I am also part of the Ghana mission trip committee at On-Site. We are raising money and medical supplies so we can go to Ghana and teach individuals from their community how to provide first aid treatment / some medical care for themselves. Softball is still a big part of my life; playing slow pitch league and tournaments."

Lyrica Langlois

Renee Smith

Renee was a very versatile player with great speed, a strong, accurate arm and outstanding defensive skills. Normally an outfielder, Renee was pressed into duty at shortstop because of injuries and played probably the best defensive game at shortstop I have seen at LMC. Renee was a BVC selection and an All State Academic Award winner. Keep your eyes open for Renee to show up on national TV in the near future!

"I'm entering my last semester at San Francisco State. I've already worked my way to being the Sports Editor for the paper here and worked close with all of the athletic teams. I've written for two different publications and my articles have been read as far as the East Coast! I've been able to work with and learn from top journalists in the Bay Area, including Amy G. the sports on-field reporter for the SF Giants. Even though I haven't played softball since LMC, I've been able to get field access to softball and baseball games here at State and I've built relationships with the coaches and players who let me use their facilities and equipment to a take a few hacks or play catch with the players.

Maria Reyes

Maria Reyes

Maria was a journeyman ballplayer. Not afraid to get in the dirt and make the tough plays at 3rd Base. She also donned the Catcher's gear and even pitched in relief when needed. Full of softball knowledge, she was always willing to share with teammates and coaches.

"As of right now, I am coaching at Liberty High School, going to school at LMC, and working full-time. Hopefully soon to be transferring from LMC."

Rachel Garcia

Rachel ("Skippy") was blessed with speed to burn and used it well as an outfielder and base stealer. She possessed tremendous bat speed and showed awesome power for a smallish player. Skippy earned All BVC recognition and left LMC with a GPA over 3.0.

"It's so good to hear from you and that you are still coaching at LMC. I am now in my Senior year at Tennessee State University. While I am no longer playing softball, I am chasing my dreams in the career field of Urban Planning (City Planning). I am also in the process of receiving my real estate license. Thank you for being a great coach and providing me with great life skills, things I will carry on with me."

Rachel Garcia

Julie Lopez

Julie Lopez was a two year pitcher that earned All Bay Valley Conference honors.

Julie was a hard-working, competitive player that always put out her best effort. Her constant smile and pleasant demeanor made her a pleasure to coach.

“Thank you to my coaches for believing in me and supporting me at LMC.

In the past 6 months I have finished my Externship at Stanford Children’s Health. I have completed courses in billing/coding and medical assisting with straight A’s.

I have been offered a position to join Stanford straight out of my externship and couldn't be more proud of myself. I wish I could share this moment with my grandmas but I truly believe this blessing came from up above and both of them are guiding me through this next step in my life.”

2015-16 Mustang Softball - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

Having fun

Desiree Chavarria, Shayna Lee, Abbee Cruz-Lawrence, Jayla Allen, Maria Reyes, and Brittni Brown

2015-16 looks like a fun and exciting time for Los Medanos Softball. A strong core of returning players and a great mix of newcomers should add up to a very enjoyable season. With the addition of Gabe Soliz as our Infield Coach, the coaching staff has improved and is eager to work with our student-athletes to become better students and better softball players.

Sophomores Brittni Brown and Maria Reyes return as Team Captains and their work ethic and skill level set expectations for all others and their eagerness to share their knowledge of the game enhances our team chemistry. Renee Smith, a returning outfielder, has been adapting to the Shortstop position and Julie Lopez returns from 2 years ago and solidifies our pitching and designated hitting needs.

Newcomers this year are led by "The Pittsburg Bomb Squad," Jayla Allen and Jazmyn Brown, two power hitters from Pittsburg High that have already put a couple out of the park in preseason games. Shayna Lee, from Tamalpais High, is a versatile player at all infield and outfield positions and adds a lot of "pop" in her bat from the left side. Texas lost a good one in Desiree Chavarria who is adept at playing both Centerfield and Shortstop and has a great understanding of softball. Our speed merchant, Rachel "Skippy" Garcia, is going to add some excitement on the base paths. Ryann Yelder, Aerial Enea, and Corina Salinas add depth to the outfield and Erica Hilderbrand to our infield. Freshman Abbee Cruz-Lawrence increases our pitching choices.

Los Medanos College Softball has surfaced again in the Bay Valley Conference (BVC) both
athletically and academically. Teams do not improve as drastically as this team did (3-33 win/loss
record in 2014 to a 16 win season in 2015) without a team of highly dedicated players on
the field and in the classroom!!!

Our 7 sophomores really were our leaders! Of the 7 players in the photo above, 5 had GPA’s over 3.3 which
earned them an Academic Award from the BVC!

Jenna Leavitt and Lyrica “Cool J” Langlois were Unanimous First Team selections,
Crystal Hicks was a Second Team selection, and Quincy Pierce was an Honorable Mention
selection on the All BVC Team. Three Freshmen, Jasmina Cross and Ashleigh Stephens-Coley
earned 2nd team honors and Vaneasia Olson was Honorable Mention!

We challenge our returning sophomores and incoming freshmen to uphold and improve upon
our successful 2015 Season!

Come join the CHALLENGE!
