When Silvia Galdamez decided to enroll at LMC, she was looking for a way to rebuild
and refocus her life. She had graduated from the California Culinary Academy – Le
Cordon Bleu in 2012. Eventually, she tired of baking from home while raising a family.
She dreamed instead of a career helping people overcome trauma. At age 29, a survivor of childhood trauma and mother of three, Galdamez stepped back into the classroom, unsure but determined.
“I chose Los Medanos College because it gave me a second chance at my education in a space that felt accessible, supportive, and close to home,” Galdamez said. Now, at 34, she credits LMC for preparing her for the next steps on her educational trajectory. She plans to transfer to San Francisco State University, where she was accepted for the online bachelor’s degree completion program in psychology.
“Some of my biggest challenges were balancing school, family and personal struggles, while overcoming academic setbacks in the beginning,” Galdamez said. “But those challenges taught me discipline, resilience, and how to keep going even when things felt overwhelming.”
She availed herself of assistance from tutoring, the Center for Academic Support and counseling and she leaned on supportive professors. “They saw my potential, even when I doubted myself,” she said.
In considering her LMC experience, Galdamez said, “What I will treasure most is my growth. I came back unsure of myself, and I’m leaving stronger, more confident, and determined. I’ll always remember the connections I built, the moments I didn’t give up, and the pride of pushing through.”
