Los Medanos College turns 50 this year. To mark the milestone, LMC is pleased to unveil its first-ever official seal.

“Unlike the logo, which could change over time to match marketing trends, a seal is an official identifier we can keep for at least the next 50 years,” said LMC President Pamela Ralston. “The seal can be used to authenticate documents such as diplomas or official reports. It can lend gravitas to events and represent our highest purposes on ceremonial pieces, like commencement flags, stoles or a mace.”

The seal’s border identifies the college’s founding year, framed by laurel leaves which are the traditional symbol of higher education. The inside depicts a bucolic scene. An oak tree frames the waterway and soft rolling dune with a rising sun in the background. The oak tree is a nod to the college’s Brentwood Center, while the dune or small hill is a pictorial translation of the Spanish word, medanos. The rising sun is symbolic of a brilliant future, growth and development. The water represents LMC’s connection to the greater Bay Area.

The seal was created by Art 180 student Emma Rivera with input from fellow students, Kaitlynn Galbraith and Owen Troelstrup. The students conducted extensive research and applied best practices in graphic design to create the seal. The Art 180 students are interns in the Marketing Department, which guided them through development and adoption of the seal.

“Having been part of the marketing department during the designing process, I am both honored and grateful to have had a hand in creating the Los Medanos College seal,” Rivera said. “Designing the seal was my very first assigned project with the Marketing Department and I'm glad that I got to work on such an important project like this before transferring. I will never forget my time with the members of the marketing team, my fellow interns and my time here at Los Medanos as a student.”

The final design was the result of a collaborative process, which began with six options that included two created by each of the interns. The interns sought feedback from each other, the President’s Cabinet and President’s Council, Los Medanos College Associated Students, Faculty Senate, Classified Senate and Shared Governance Council. This narrowed the selections to two. The campus voted to select the final design during College Assembly on April 1.

“This seal conveys the beauty of Los Medanos College,” Marketing Director Juliet Casey said. “It represents the optimistic future our students and employees see for themselves and the greater community based on the LMC experience.”
