Pittsburg, Calif. – Los Medanos College is pleased to invite the community to celebrate Pride Month in recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, queer and non-binary individuals, beginning with a Progress Pride Flag raising ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 5 at the front of campus, 2700 E. Leland Road. The flag will fly for the month of June.

“It’s important for Los Medanos College to make clear to our students, classified professionals, faculty, and our larger community how much they belong here,” President Pamela Ralston said. “We welcome all students. We underscore that LGBTQIA members of our academic community are essential to who we are. Flying the Progress Pride Flag in June is one part of that.”

The ceremony will include remarks from members of the LMC community and the Rainbow Community Center of Contra Costa County. Following remarks LMC will raise the Progress Pride Flag. Guests can enjoy coffee and donuts afterward.

“Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate and ensure that our LGBTQ+ community feels seen, especially students,” said Interim Dean of Equity and Inclusion Rosa Armendariz. “At LMC, we strive to create a campus environment where all our students, employees and community members feel they that they belong and that their contributions to campus and academic life is valued.”

Pride Month is celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, which served as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The month-long celebration recognizes the influence that LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history, culture, and society, and acknowledges the ongoing struggles for equal rights and acceptance.
