Juror's Statement

The jury process is inherently subjective as there are many ways to perceive and interact with artwork. I ask myself several questions within the confines of the specific categories. My first pass is about immediacy. What pops out first and what is my first impression/read. Second pass explores what the work means, what is the artist saying or not saying? How do I feel when I look at this work? Thirdly, I evaluate technique and whether it fits into the category.

What makes the work compelling? The process is much like the unfolding of a relationship; there are layers upon layers to explore.

My work as a photographer is a constant practice in the ‘ways of seeing.’ In this digital age we consume massive amounts of imagery and messages at a lightening speed. How are we breaking down this stimulation? How are we using it to interact and create? I thank you for allowing me to ‘see’ your work!

CONVERGENCE/DIVERGENCE SYMPOSIUM on Saturday 8 December from 10am-1pm (US West Coast time).

This symposium will showcase projects by artists, scientists and activists. It will happen simultaneously online on Waterwheel's Tap* & at Los Medanos College (LMC) Gallery in California, in the context of the CONVERGENCE/DIVERGENCE exhibition organised by WEAD (Women Environmental Artist Directory) and curated by the initiator & co-founder of Waterwheel.

Each presentation will be maximum 20minutes including Q&A from audience online and at LMC.

* Waterwheel enables meaningful sharing on this vital topic through its unique free video-conferencing & media mixing system: the Tap - like a combination of skype group video, flickr and youtube for all kinds of media, focused on water. Waterwheel provides a platform for thinkers, activists, artists, scientists and educators to inform, debate, present and archive about water. It supports digital and sustainability culture, minimising both carbon & water  footprints by eliminating distance between collaborators.
