  • 23-24 Dependency Override Appeal Process and Form

    Dependency Override Appeal:

Student aid programs operate under the idea that it is primarily your and your family's responsibility to pay for your education. The financial aid application uses a series of dependency questions to determine whether or not a student is required to provide parental information. Students unable to complete the financial aid application with parental information may request a Dependency Override. Financial Aid Administrators may override a student's dependency status on a case-by-case basis for students with unusual circumstances.

You can request a review of your dependency status based on unusual circumstances, such as the following:

    • An abusive family environment that threatens the student's health or safety
    • Abandonment by parents
    • Unable to locate parents
    • Incapacity of the parent due to incarceration, mental illness, or physical illness

The following are not considered unusual circumstances to request a review of your dependency status:

    • Not living with your parents
    • Not being financially supported by parents
    • Not being claimed by your parents on taxes
    • A parent's refusal to help help you with the application process

    To Apply:

Submit the Dependency Override Request Form to be considered for a dependency override. Students will need to provide the following information:

    • A written statement indicating the unusual circumstances that have occurred that prevent you from providing parental information on your financial aid application
    • Student income information
    • Third-party reference or other sufficient documentation to support your unusual circumstances

    What happens next?

    •  Our office will review your appeal to determine if your unusual circumstances can be considered for a dependency override
    • You will be advised of the status of your appeal via your student email
    • Please allow 4-6 weeks for processing. Additional processing time may be needed if more information is required. Check your email and respond quickly to requests for further information.

    Dependency Override Renewal

A student with a previously approved Dependency Override at any 4CD college in the 2023-2024 award year or later will be presumed independent for each subsequent award year. The Office of Financial Aid may review conflicting dependency statuses if information exists in subsequent years. Students will be advised via email if more information is required.
