About the Assessment Test

The English, ESL and math assessment tests help you determine the appropriate English, ESL and math courses for your current learning needs. Testing (or comparable level course work already completed) is required before enrollment into English 90 and above, before enrollment into ESL courses above level I, or to enter into a math course above Math 12.

 

Assessment testing is at a computer. Set aside 1 ½  - 2 hours to complete both the English & Math in one setting, or the two tests may be taken on seperate days. Students taking the ESL assessment should plan on spending 1 - 2 hours to finish (time is dependent on your English language proficiency). All questions are multiple choice, and instructions are easy to follow. New students should complete assessment testing prior to attending a *New Student Workshop.

 

You will receive your test results and recommended placements immediately after completing the test. You cannot "fail" assessment or be denied admission to the college. The tests are a measure of your current skill level.

 

Steps to Take Before Taking the Assessment:

• Step 1: Apply to LMC
  You must have a current Application to Los Medanos College on file.
  IMPORTANT: Wait 24 hours from the time you submit your Application for Admission to schedule an Assessment Test Appointment (English and Math Placement Tests).
  
  

• Step 2: Schedule An Appointment for an Assessment Test
  To schedule an Assessment Test Appointment, scroll down this page to the "Make an Appointment" button and follow the directions, or find the Assessment Center page from the A-Z index on the LMC website.

• Step 3: Review Assessment Test Sample Questions and Study Guides
  It is highly recommended that you review the Assessment Test: Sample Questions and Study Guides because you may only take the English and/or math test once per calendar year.
  
  
• Step 4: Day of the Test
  You must bring a photo ID, for example a CA driver's license or high school ID, to take the test. It must be shown to the examiner at the time of testing - no exceptions. We begin check-in at the test start time. Please arrive on time. Late comers may be turned away.
  

Additional Information

• Math Assessment
  If you have completed one year of high school Algebra II with a grade of C or better, Math Assessment may not be necessary. Please check with our front office staff for more information.
