Q. What is CalWORKs?

California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids is the state’s welfare program for families with children. CalWORKs replaced the former AFDC program in January 1998.


CalWORKs funds assist parents who are receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF), and those transitioning off welfare, to achieve long-term self-sufficiency through coordinated student services.



Q. What are the eligibility requirements?

  • You must receive cash aid in the form of CalWORKs/TANF for yourself and your child
  • Be in an approved County WTW plan
  • Fulfill work participation requirement
  • Complete a LMC CalWORKs orientation every semester


Q. What can the LMC CalWORKs Program do for me?

The LMC CalWORKs Program supports eligible students to achieve their educational goals and assist them in meeting Department of Social Services requirements quickly and effectively. In order to do this, we provide the following services:

Q. How can I find out if I qualify for CalWORKs?

If you are a low income California resident with at least one child under the age of 19, you can go to the local Contra Costa County Health & Human Services Office office and fill out an application.
