2015-16 Mustang Softball Athletes Excel Academically

2015-2016 Mustang Softball Team

In the words of Gail Newman, Senior Dean of Student Services, "LMC Student Athletes ROCK!”

Although you may not have had a chance to watch our student athletes in competition this year, you should be aware that we not only have stars on the courts and on the playing field, but also a very impressive list of athletes who have been selected to be on their respective “All State Academic Teams”. This means that they completed one or two seasons of competition with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Our Mustang Softball All State Academic Award Winners are:

(*Brittni is ranked #7 of 27 from throughout the state! Also note, LMC has 5 softball players out of a list of 27 total winners in California; considering there are 83 community colleges with 12 – 15 players statewide, our players were selected from among 1200 athletes – impressive!!).

Kudos to our amazing athletes and congratulations as well to our coaches who are so instrumental in promoting excellence and setting the bar high for our teams. In the words of Coach Rognlien, “How’s that for promoting an Aspen Top 150 Community Colleges Award?!”

2015-16 Mustang Softball - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

Having fun

Desiree Chavarria, Shayna Lee, Abbee Cruz-Lawrence, Jayla Allen, Maria Reyes, and Brittni Brown

2015-16 looks like a fun and exciting time for Los Medanos Softball. A strong core of returning players and a great mix of newcomers should add up to a very enjoyable season. With the addition of Gabe Soliz as our Infield Coach, the coaching staff has improved and is eager to work with our student-athletes to become better students and better softball players.

Sophomores Brittni Brown and Maria Reyes return as Team Captains and their work ethic and skill level set expectations for all others and their eagerness to share their knowledge of the game enhances our team chemistry. Renee Smith, a returning outfielder, has been adapting to the Shortstop position and Julie Lopez returns from 2 years ago and solidifies our pitching and designated hitting needs.

Newcomers this year are led by "The Pittsburg Bomb Squad," Jayla Allen and Jazmyn Brown, two power hitters from Pittsburg High that have already put a couple out of the park in preseason games. Shayna Lee, from Tamalpais High, is a versatile player at all infield and outfield positions and adds a lot of "pop" in her bat from the left side. Texas lost a good one in Desiree Chavarria who is adept at playing both Centerfield and Shortstop and has a great understanding of softball. Our speed merchant, Rachel "Skippy" Garcia, is going to add some excitement on the base paths. Ryann Yelder, Aerial Enea, and Corina Salinas add depth to the outfield and Erica Hilderbrand to our infield. Freshman Abbee Cruz-Lawrence increases our pitching choices.

2014-2015 Sophomore Softball Players, from left to right: Jenna Leavitt, Destiny Perkins. Lyrica Langlois, Crystal Hicks, Quincy Pierce, Gabby Worley, Tula Johnson

Los Medanos College Softball has surfaced again in the Bay Valley Conference (BVC) both
athletically and academically. Teams do not improve as drastically as this team did (3-33 win/loss
record in 2014 to a 16 win season in 2015) without a team of highly dedicated players on
the field and in the classroom!!!

Our 7 sophomores really were our leaders! Of the 7 players in the photo above, 5 had GPA’s over 3.3 which
earned them an Academic Award from the BVC!

Jenna Leavitt and Lyrica “Cool J” Langlois were Unanimous First Team selections,
Crystal Hicks was a Second Team selection, and Quincy Pierce was an Honorable Mention
selection on the All BVC Team. Three Freshmen, Jasmina Cross and Ashleigh Stephens-Coley
earned 2nd team honors and Vaneasia Olson was Honorable Mention!

We challenge our returning sophomores and incoming freshmen to uphold and improve upon
our successful 2015 Season!

Come join the CHALLENGE!
Tim Rognlien, Head Coach, Mustang Softball (925) 783-3964
