PITTSBURG: Los Medanos College (LMC) held a commencement ceremony honoring their most recent graduates on May 24 at the college's football stadium.

This year, 303 students walked at the college's ceremony (last year, the college had approximately 242 students participate in the 2012 commencement ceremony and 260 in 2011.) There was standing room only as the crowd of family and friends overflowed the college's football stadium to congratulate their graduates.

“Commencement is such a tremendous tradition and is one of the ultimate symbols of student success”, stated Los Medanos College President Bob Kratochvil. “It's wonderful to have seen so many of our students graduate due to their hard work and the huge support from their families and friends – and in no small part – the faculty, staff and administrators at LMC.”

This is the second year that Los Medanos College has awarded Associate Degrees of Transfer (ADT). These are degrees that have been designed specifically to make it easier to transfer from a California community college to one of the California State University (CSU) campuses. The college currently offers eight ADTs in addition to the college's 32 Associate Degrees. The college plans to seek State approval for a total of 18 ADTs, with 10 currently pending or in development. They are due to be submitted by June 2014.

The college has been working hard to develop new ways to encourage and support students so that they successfully reach their goal of completing a certificate, associate degree, or transfer path. Recent efforts include the development of a Summer Bridge program (started in 2012), Transfer Academy (started in 2011), enhancement of the college's new student orientation, and development and expansion of accelerated models in math and English curriculum.
