Course
Prerequisites & Advisories
Some courses have prerequisites or advisories included with the
course description. These are designated by the instructional departments
to assist students in
selection of course levels for their maximum success. References to “successful
completion” implies with a grade of ‘C’ or better.
Prerequisite: A course or other requirement that must
be completed and verified prior to enrollment in a more advanced level course.
Advisory: A course that is recommended, prior to enrollment in another
course. The recommended course is useful as an indication of
the desired level of
proficiency needed to successfully complete the next course level.
Important: To ensure proper placement, prerequisites
for all classes will be checked at the time of registration. If you
have taken
a prerequisite
course
at an institution other than LMC, you should request to have an official
transcript sent to the LMC Admissions & Records Office prior to
registration or bring a transcript with you for purposes of verification.
Prerequisite challenges will only be considered prior to
the start of the semester. Challenge forms are available through the
Admissions & Records Office or
the Brentwood Center Office. A student may be conditionally enrolled
in a course upon submission of a completed challenge form. If the
challenge is denied,
the student will be dropped from the class and the enrollment fee
will be refunded.

Challenge
Process
Students may challenge a course prerequisite prior to the first day of instruction.
Students who wish to challenge a prerequisite may do so by submitting to the
Admissions Office a Prerequisite Challenge Form along with documentation
that they have the prerequisite skills to enter the class. (The challenge form
is available at Admissions, Counseling, and the Assessment Center.)
Students who wish to challenge the prerequisite on the basis that they have
the necessary skills to succeed in the course may choose one of the following
two options to provide documentation of their skills:
- Go
to the Assessment Center to take the challenge test, which will be
a writing assignment based on readings selected by the English department.
Readings may be taken home and read prior to the written portion
of the exam, but writing must be done in the Assessment Center.
- Submit
a portfolio of written work with a cover letter that explains why
you believe you have the prerequisite skills to succeed in the course
in which you wish to enroll.
Your challenge
test will be holistically scored, or the portfolio evaluated by a committee
of 2-3 English faculty. You will be contacted within 5 working days and
informed of the committees decision.
Students who wish to appeal the committees decision should follow the appeals
process outlined in the college catalog under Student Rights Under Title
5 Matriculation Regulations.
Please
note: Per the Model District Policy, if space is available in
a course when a student files a challenge to the prerequisite or corequisite,
the district shall reserve a seat for the student and resolve the challenge
within 5 working days. If the challenge is upheld or the district fails
to resolve the challenge within the 5 days, the student shall be allowed
to enroll in the course. If no space is available in the course when
the challenge is filed, the challenge shall be resolved prior to the
beginning of registration for the next term, and, if the challenge
is upheld, the student shall be permitted to enroll if space is available
when the student registers for that subsequent term.
