Free Event 2/10/12 at 7PM
On the evening of July 17, 1944, the Liberty Ship S.S. Bryan containing 4,600 tons of ammunition blew up on the Port Chicago Naval Base instantly killing 320 men, 202 of them Black seamen, who were working on the loading docks. When the Navy ordered members of the surviving segregated munitions crew to resume bomb loading operations a subsequent work stoppage led to the singling out of 50 men to be charged with mutiny during wartime.
On the evening of February 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the LMC Library, Dr. Robert Allen, UC Berkeley Professor and author of the acclaimed book "The Port Chicago Mutiny" will discuss the importance of Port Chicago in the narrative of the civil rights history of America.
