Chinese

A communicative approach is used to teach two beginning level 5-unit Transfer Level Chinese courses offered at LMC: Chinese 30 Elementary Chinese I, and Chinese 40 Elementary Chinese II. The courses are designed in sequence for the transfer bound student. Students learn grammar and syntax of the Mandarin Chinese language and the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with an emphasis on production. Culture is interwoven into each course highlighting the uniqueness of various Chinese-speaking countries, their people and the culture of Chinese speakers in the United States.  The courses are offered days and evenings on site in Pittsburg and currently off site at Pittsburg High School.  

The independent study 98 Independent Study in Chinese and Chinese 99 Cooperative Education in Chinese offer students the opportunity to design and pursue their own interests in a particular area or work under agreement of an employer and a faculty member in a supervised cooperative education project. Latin

 

A traditional approach is used to teach two beginning level 5-unit Transfer Level Latin courses offered at LMC: Latin 20, Latin 21. The courses are designed in sequence for the transfer bound student. Students learn grammar and syntax of the Latin language and the language skills of reading, and writing with emphasis on attaining higher levels of English reading and writing skills paramount to success in higher education. Culture is interwoven into each course highlighting the uniqueness of various Latin influenced countries, their people and the culture of latin users in the United States.  The courses are occasionally offered evenings on site in Pittsburg.

Sign Language

An intensive communicative approach is used to teach four sequential beginning and intermediate level 3-Unit Transfer Level Sign Language courses offered at LMC: American Sign Language I Sign 65, American Sign Language II Sign 66, American Sign Language III Sign 67, and American Sign Language IV Sign 68. Upon successful completion of Sign 65 students may enroll in two short term, .5 unit, intensive fingerspelling courses: Sign 70 Fingerspelling I and Sign 71 Fingerspelling II. Upon successful completion of Sign 66 or course challenge students may enroll in Sign 72 Deaf Culture 3 units. The courses are offered afternoons and evenings on site in Pittsburg and Brentwood.

Spanish

A communicative approach is used to teach four beginning and intermediate level 5-unit Transfer Level Spanish courses offered at LMC:  Spanish 50, Spanish 51, Spanish 52, and Spanish 53.  The courses are designed in sequence for the transfer bound student. Students learn grammar and syntax of the Spanish language and the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with an emphasis on production. Culture is interwoven into each course highlighting the uniqueness of various Spanish-speaking countries, their people and the culture of Spanish speakers in the United States.  The courses are offered days and evenings on site in Pittsburg, and at our Brentwood site.  Beginning level transfer Spanish classes are offered in a partially online course that meets Monday evenings on the Brentwood site. Spanish 49 Conversational Latino Cinema and Spanish 60 Exploring Latino Cinema: A Critical Analysis are intermediate level courses designed for students interested in gaining or maintaining language skills at the intermediate level.

The Conversational Spanish courses: Spanish 44 Conversational Spanish I, Spanish 45 Conversational Spanish II, Spanish 46 Spanish for Law Enforcement, Spanish 47 Spanish for Health Services, and Spanish 48 Spanish for Business are nontransferable courses for the true beginner. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.  Students learn the basics of everyday conversational Spanish using a variety of listening and speaking activities, workbook activities, skit writing and presentation.  Students practice orally with one another in class to acquire language using situational based activities. The courses are useful for acquiring basic vocabulary and a rudimentary understanding of the Spanish verbal system.  It is useful for elementary school teachers and anyone working closely with non-English speaking heritage Spanish speakers. Some of the courses short-term courses are designed for on the job Spanish. The courses are offered days and evenings on site in Pittsburg, and at our Brentwood site. 

The online Elementary Spanish Grammar courses: Spanish 80, Spanish 81, and Spanish 82 offer three levels of beginning level Spanish grammar. The courses are completely online, self paced and offer individual practice on discrete grammar points. These courses may be taken by students with no previous Spanish experience or used as a tutorial for current Spanish students in need of additional practice.
