Frequently asked questions
1. How long will it take to complete the program?
You can determine your own pace for completing the certificate or the degree. The 33- unit Certificate of Achievement can be completed in a minimum 3 semesters. The 60-unit AS Degree can be completed in a minimum 2 to 2.5 years by taking some courses during the summer.
2. Where are the PTEC courses being offered?
Introductory courses PTEC 10 & 12 are being offered at both Los Medanos College and at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. The remaining 7 PTEC Core Courses are offered only at the Los Medanos College campus.
3. Can I get a job right away?
The California Community College system is open to everyone. As such, we don't guarentee anyone a job. However, we do work closely with the industry partners in our area. The PTEC program was started at LMC by these industry partners to provide a more highly trained workforce.
4. How much does it cost?
The enrollment fee per unit of credit will be $20, starting in January 2007, for California residents. Non-California-residents should contact the Admissions Office for the fees. Textbooks for each course will need to be purchased. The LMC bookstore will stock the books for each course immediately before each course begins. Parking for each semester is $35.
TUITION PAID FOR UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE ...
- PTEC students will receive a refund of their tuition (not including books or other fees) for all 9 core PTEC classes through the Department of Labor Community Based Job Training Grant. The refund will be mailed after completion of each semester's PTEC courses taken.
- A limited number of scholarships are available through the LMC PTEC program for those with financial need.
5. Does the college provide employment assistance?
Yes. The PTEC program at the college has close ties with the local industry. Graduates from the PTEC program will be job ready for positions in the petrochemical industry, food manufacture, water sanitation, waste disposal and other industries that employ plant operators. The program faculty and the LMC Career Center will provide you with employment leads.
