New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation

If this is the first time you have been to college and you plan to pursue an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college or university, you are strongly encouraged to complete a New Student Orientation, either in person or online. If you are taking classes solely to fulfill personal interests or to enhance your job skills, you are are exempt from orientation and we ask that you complete and submit a Matriculation Exemption Request to the Information Center or LMC mailbox #25 .

You have two options for New Student Orientation. The first option is to take the online orientation at your convenience and make an appointment with a counselor to plan your first-semester classes. The second option is to make an appointment to attend a New Student Workshop where a counselor will give you a Student Handbook, tell you the important things you need to know before beginning college, and then help you select your first-semester classes.

If you have never been to college before and are planning to pursue an associate degree or to transfer to a four-year college or university, you must take take assessment tests before attending a New Student Workshop or before seeing a counselor after taking the online orientation. There may be additional reasons why you should or should not take the assessment tests; see "Who needs to take the assessment tests".

Assessment tests may be taken at the Assessment Center or at Brentwood Center during drop-in testing hours. Visit the Assessment Center website for the latest assessment schedule.

If you have already submitted an application, you may take the online orientation or sign up for a workshop by requesting a workshop date below. You may also sign up at the admissions window or by calling Information Services at 925.439.2181, ext. 3422.
