Emergency Medical Technician The purpose of the EMT-I training program is to prepare individuals to render prehospital basic life support at the scene of an emergency, during transport of the sick and injured, or during interfacility transfer within an organized EMS system. Completion of the Emergenc
y Medical Technician-Basic courses qualifies students to test for EMT-1 California State Certification through the National Registry of EMTs. Where Do You Want to Go from Here? Although most EMTs start their career in the ambulance industry, this certificate is a foundation for other EMS careers including Firefighter, Emergency Room Technician, Paramedic, Flight Paramedic, and Nursing. Los Medanos College offers a variety of programs and academies to compliment these fields and careers. What is a paramedic? A paramedic is an EMT-P, or advanced life support provider. Paramedics have all the training of an EMT, with an advanced scope of practice and a higher skill level. On addition to the basic skills of an EMT, a paramedic is also trained in advanced airway management, intravenous therapy (IV) and can administer medications. LMC does not offer a paramedic program, but there are local options available for this training. Methods of Instruction:
