Where Do You Want to Go from Here? 

Although most EMTs start their career in the ambulance industry, this certificate is a foundation for other EMS careers including Firefighter, Emergency Room Technician, Paramedic, Flight Paramedic, and Nursing.  Los Medanos College offers a variety of programs and academies to compliment these fields and careers.

What is a paramedic?

A paramedic is an EMT-P, or advanced life support provider. Paramedics have all the training of an EMT, with an advanced scope of practice and a higher skill level. On addition to the basic skills of an EMT, a paramedic is also trained in advanced airway management, intravenous therapy (IV) and can administer medications. LMC does not offer a paramedic program, but there are local options available for this training.

Methods of Instruction:

  1. Lecture on management of medical and traumatic emergencies; care of pediatric, geriatric, and special needs patients; emergency childbirth; multiple patient incidents; and EMT well being.
  2. Self paced CD ROM exercises, videos and web site activities
  3. Laboratory practice and return demonstration of skills
  4. Emergency Room clinical experience and evaluation (contract pending)
  5. Ambulance ride-a-long experience and evaluation
