The purpose of the EMT-I training program is to prepare individuals to render prehospital basic life support at the scene of an emergency, during transport of the sick and injured, or during interfacility transfer within an organized EMS system. Completion of the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic courses qualifies students to test for EMT-1 California State Certification through the National Registry of EMTs.

Where Do You Want to Go from Here? 

Although most EMTs start their career in the ambulance industry, this certificate is a foundation for other EMS careers including Firefighter, Emergency Room Technician, Paramedic, Flight Paramedic, and Nursing.  Los Medanos College offers a variety of programs and academies to compliment these fields and careers

Methods of Instruction:

  1. Lecture on management of medical and traumatic emergencies; care of pediatric, geriatric, and special needs patients; emergency childbirth; multiple patient incidents; and EMT well being.
  2. Self paced CD ROM exercises, videos and web site activities
  3. Laboratory practice and return demonstration of skills
  4. Emergency Room clinical experience and evaluation (contract pending)
  5. Ambulance ride-a-long experience and evaluation
