Registered Nursing Program Assessment

2011-12

Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes (PSLOs)

At the completion of the LMC Registered Nursing Program, a student will:

  1. Be academically and clinically prepared to obtain employment as a neophyte registered nurse.

  2. Apply the nursing process to research, evaluate, analyze, and synthesized information.

  3. Utilize appropriate written and verbal communication techniques to ensure optimal communication with patients, family members, and other members of the healthcare team.

  4. Implement nursing interventions utilizing current technology based upon scientific rationales.

  5. Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to take and pass the National Council’s Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).

PSLO Assessment Report Summary

What we looked at: Our assessment research focused on PSLO #5.  We reviewed pass rates on the NCLEX-RN for the graduating classes of 2011 and 2012.

What we found: Of the 51 students who completed the RN program in May of 2011, 98% of them hold valid California Nursing Licenses according to the Board of Registered Nursing’s Website. Of the 33 students who completed the RN program in May of 2012, we were able to establish that 94% of them hold valid California Nursing Licenses according to the Board of Registered Nursing’s Website (http://www2.dca.ca.gov/pls/wllpub/wllqryna$lcev2.startup?p_qte_code=RN&p_qte_pgm_code=7800).

What we are planning to work on: We plan to maintain and/or increase the percentage of students who pass the NCLEX-RN and receive a California Nursing License by continuing to maintain the minimum passing score of 75% on class exams and by continuing to map our test questions to the NCLEX Test Plan that is posted by the National Council for State Boards of Nursing.

Recommendations for students: Students are advised to take the recommended HESI Exit Exam. This exam predicts potential for passing the NCLEX-RN and provides students with information as to areas where remediation would increase likelihood of passing. Remediation is included as part of the fee paid by students.
