Major Roadmaps

Simplifying the path

vocational nursing

This Roadmap is provided as a SAMPLE GUIDE showing what a full-time student's schedule MAY look like. There is no guarantee that all classes will be offered each semester or that classes will have space available. You must meet all prerequisite requirements prior to registering for a class.

The Vocational Nursing program is impacted, so selection of qualified applicants is done by a computerized random selection process. To qualify for the applicant pool, the applicant must have all prerequisites completed before applying to the program and an overall 2.5 GPA (and a "C" or better) on the prerequisite courses.

The Vocational Nursing program requires three semesters beyond the completion of the prerequisite courses. Consult with a Los Medanos Counselor for help planning your schedule. Vist the Nursing Program website for more information.

Careers in Nursing for LVNs

Nursing is a challenging and rewarding career for those seeking to make a difference in people's lives. It requires good communication skills, critical thinking, decision making, and requires knowledge of science and technology. Nurses often work different shifts, including days, evenings, nights or per diem (on-call). Opportunities are available throughout the nation, allowing graduates to relocate almost anywhere.

The Vocational Nursing program at LMC is designed to prepare qualified graduates to take the state board exam (NCLEX-PN) to become Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN). LVNs assist RNs and doctors in the care of patients with medical problems. They administer medications, monitor equipment, change dressings, feed, bathe, massage and dress patients, maintain patients' charts, and take vital signs. LMC also offers a career ladder for LVNs to become RNs. Please consult the Nursing Applicant Handbooks for more information on all nursing programs.

Entry-Level Registered Nursing Salary Averages in California:

Licensed Vocational Nurse: $17.63 - $32.73 per hour

Information gathered by Career One Stop (www.careerinfonet.org) which is sponsored by the Department of Labor, 2012

Completion of the Vocational Nursing program at Los Medanos College qualifies students to take the State Board Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).
