Since its inception in 1974 Los Medanos College has been the best place to prepare for a challenging yet rewarding career in public safety. Five distinct programs of study are available to students seeking certificates and degrees that will aid students in the competitive public safety job market.
Students seeking a career in the field of Administration of Justice can earn an associate of science degree by attending both day and evening classes in four semesters. Our graduates are actively recruited by federal, state and local agencies; and have become federal law enforcement agents, prosecuting and defense attorneys, obtained jobs in the field of forensic science, or gone to work for local law enforcement agencies in both sworn and civilian positions.
Aspiring peace officers can attend either the full-time or part-time Law Enforcement Academy and upon successful completion become eligible for hire as a full-time officer or police reserve. The academy is certified by the California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) and is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for VA benefits under the G.I. Bill.
Fire Technology/Academy courses are designed especially for those people seeking employment or advancement in public or private fire protection agencies. Courses are also available for those who are pursuing a higher degree in fire administration or fire protection engineering.The program features an 18-week Fire Fighter I Academy that is accredited by the California State Fire Marshal.
Designed primarily for career and paid-on-call volunteer firefighters, the Fire Officer Academy consists of California State Fire Marshal curriculum meeting and exceeding national standards that when coupled with employment leads to certification as a California Fire Officer. LMC Fire Officer Academy courses are presented in partnership with the Contra Costa County Fire Chiefs’ Association and are accredited by the California State Fire Marshal.
LMC’s Emergency Medical Services program offers courses that lead to an exciting career such as becoming a state-certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). EMTs are skilled medical workers who respond by ambulance to medical emergencies. EMTs determine the nature and extent of the victim’s injury or illness, and administer first-aid and emergency life support. Many EMTs go on to become Paramedics or Firefighter/Paramedics.
