Dear LMC Community,
Although the start of Summer Session and the arrival of new students on campus should be an exciting time, I know that in the wake of the tragedy that occurred in Orlando – the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history – there are many heavy hearts all across Los Medanos College. Senseless and appalling acts such as this seem to be happening far too often in our community and throughout the country. Our condolences and thoughts go out to the victims’ families, loved ones, and friends. I feel it is important to underscore our principles as an educational institution: valuing the importance of diversity, multiple perspectives, and mutual respect; providing a safe and welcoming environment for teaching, learning, and working; and embedding equity and inclusion in our institutional practices and policies. This commitment applies to ALL members of our community – persons of all ethnicities, races, national origins, religions, sexual orientations, gender identities, disabilities, ages, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Below is information about two activities aimed at acknowledging the tragedy in Orlando. They also provide an opportunity to promote dialogue and healing around acts of violence and hate:
A Campus Conversation:
LMC Counselors will be facilitating a conversation regarding the shootings in Orlando.

At the LMC Library fountain: An interactive message board has been created on which people can express their thoughts, prayers, condolences, and support. People are invited to fill out cards with messages of support that will be sent to the City of Orlando. If you would like to share your thoughts online, use the following hashtag: #WeStandWithOrlando.
I invite you to take part in these activities, or even to simply think about how we – together, as a College community – can continue to promote and demonstrate our commitment to inclusion, equity, respect, safety, and success for all.
