PITTSBURG: Shelby Secor of the Los Medanos College (LMC) conference-winning women’s basketball team has been recruited by Merrimack College in North Andover, MA. She was awarded a full scholarship to transfer to Merrimack and play basketball.

Secor was 3rd Team All-State as a freshman, a two-time Bay Valley Conference (BVC) 1st team All-Conference player and Co-MVP. She was selected for the BVC All-Academic Team this year (a player must have over a 3.0 GPA during her freshmen/sophomore years while participating in athletics). She came to LMC from Antioch High School and played as a forward and center during her LMC tenure.

LMC Women’s Basketball Coach Richard Villegas commented,  “This young lady was a pleasure and a honor to coach and work with. Not only did she excel on the court, but she also was a big success in the classroom. She was one of our team captains and leaders on the court. In Shelby’s tenure here at LMC, the women’s basketball team won their 1st championship in over 20 years and made the CCCAA Northern California play-offs her freshmen year. LMC win-loss record was 40-20 overall while she was here. Now she is being rewarded for her hard work, dedication and commitment with a full scholarship at the four-year level to continue her education. ”

“I originally went to San Francisco State after I graduated from high school, but it wasn’t a good match for me,” explained Secor. “I decided to get my associate degree from LMC and then transfer to a four-year school. I wasn’t sure if I was going to play basketball anymore, but a friend of mine who was on the team at the time convinced me to go to open gym. I really enjoyed how Villegas coached his team and it made me want to play again!”

Secor continued, “I decided to transfer to Merrimack because they have my major (nutrition) and are giving me the scholarship opportunity I was looking for. It also is very beautiful campus with small class sizes, and they have a very passionate women’s basketball program. The conversations I’ve had with the coaches make me feel very secure in my decision to choose Merrimack. I feel very luck to have this opportunity.”

Secor committed to Merrimack in May and will start attending classes there this fall. She is very excited about attending her new school and getting settled in.
