PITTSBURG -- Los Medanos College recently recognized members of the community who
embody César Chavez's tradition of voluntary service, civic activism, and nonviolent
social change.
During the annual "Celebrating the Life of César Chávez" awards program on March
29, the college presented three recognition awards. The LMC César Chávez Award for
Exemplary Community Service, established in 1995, is given to local citizens who best
represent Chávez's core values.
This year's recipients were The Rev. Greg Osorio and Timi Tumbaga, both residents
of Pittsburg with a deep commitment to community activism, according to a Los Medanos
College spokeswoman.
Osorio is a pastor at First Baptist Church and Tumbaga has a lifelong history of
voluntary service.
The East County Educator Award recognizes a member of the educational community who
demonstrates a commitment to student success and equity, particularly for students
of color and those from low-income families.
The award was presented to Luis Morales, a counselor at Los Medanos College.
The Chávez Spirit Award is given to an emerging leader who has made a significant
impact on the local community in the areas of advocacy and social justice.
The Spirit Award winner was an up-and-coming leader, LMC student Felipa Gonzalez,
of Bay Point.
