Martinez Refinery has openings for Refinery Process Operators in an environment where safety is our number one focus. The Operator position requires mechanical or craft-related abilities and involves physical, outdoor-type work, inlcuding climbing. Operators provide support to refinery unit operations.

Responsibilities:

Safety is the number one priority at the Martinez Refinery. Achieve the Health and Safety Expectations of Your Department and the refinery.
Safety:
1. Put your own personal safety and the safety of your team members first.
2. Monitor safety performance by reviewing safety statistics on a weekly basis; discuss areas of concern with your team members.
3. Follow all safety policies and procedures established for your unit and the refinery.
4. Avoid "shortcuts" and promote the value of following procedures to your team members.
5. Demonstrate through your words and actions that safety is the priority when it conflicts with other requirements.
6. Participate in and lead safety meetings with team members.
7. Conduct housekeeping activities in your unit. Attend to leaks, spills, trash, hoses, etc.
8. Work with your team members to identify actions which could be taken to increase safety.
9. Determine when it is necessary to elevate a safety concern to the attention of your team members, leaders, Health and Safety Department, or emergency response personnel.
10. Take action to ensure near-misses are reported and discussed with your team members.
11. Handle all injuries according to stated policy and procedures.
12. Complete training to develop your knowledge and skills of safety procedures.
13. Share your knowledge of safety procedures by training and developing your team members.
14. Follow the permitting processes. Be able to issue required permits for equipment within your unit. 
15. Work with your team members to establish goals and expectations regarding safety.
16. Recognize or coach your team members who have supported/not supported safe practices.
17. Complete safety check sheets and take appropriate action.
18. Take ownership of safety. Stop unsafe acts and create safety suggestions where appropriate.
19. Stop work due to operational changes or upsets. (Evacuate personnel as necessary.)
20. Pre-plan and coordinate with the Health and Safety Department on upcoming work or events that will impact them.
21. Safely prepare lines and equipment for work (including Hot Work).
22. Participate in and lead a Safety Audit of your unit or area of responsibility once per set of shifts, i.e., days, swings, graveyard.
23. Attend Basic Fire Crew Training as scheduled. Utilize/maximize the opportunity to learn and gain information on Fire Fighting Skills.
24. Respond to all Basic Fire crew incidents.
25. Execute the basics of fire fighting, initial control and containment.
Health:
26. Know the potential impact of your actions on the health of others. Take appropriate actions to notify and protect your team members, anyone in your unit, and the community from a potential health impact.
27. Be proficient in the use of the electronic MSDS System and CHIT System.

Achieve the Environmental Expectations of Your Department and the refinery.
1. Identify potential environmental problems; encourage team members to also be proactive in this manner. Incorporate concerns for the environment and community in your planning and execution of each task.
2. Obtain the resources required to support unit environmental efforts.
3. Know and follow the environmental procedures and policies including follow-up reporting on any environmental incident.
4. Immediately report all incidents (spills, releases, equipment malfunctions, etc.) to the proper designate (Security, Environmental, Health and Safety Department, etc.).
5. Discuss environmental issues and problems with your team.
6. Work with your team members to establish goals and expectations regarding environmental performance.
7. Recognize or coach team members who have supported/not supported environmental practices.
8. Coordinate/conduct Environmental Impact "what if" drills.
9. Monitor environmental performance by reviewing environmental statistics on a weekly basis.
10. Troubleshoot situations which could lead to environmental problems.
11. Perform (as required) all Fugitive Emissions, testing and repair.
12. Know and follow all Container Labeling procedures.


Requirements:

The Process Operator is responsible for monitoring, controlling and conducting activities that pertain to unit operation and taking corrective action when necessary to ensure that all unit conditions and operations are in compliance with Shell safety, environmental and operating policies and procedures.

Typical duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring strict compliance with Shell’s safety policies and procedures, taking immediate corrective action in the event a potential issue or unsafe behavior is observed.
  • Ensure proper turn-over by providing effective written and oral communications to the relieving shift and technician that cover routine and non-routine issues, problems faced, unit operating conditions, etc.
  • Monitoring and accurately recording temperatures, pressures and rates of flow for upward or downward trends.
  • Maintain good communications with other team members and with other facility teams (utilities, Logistics, etc.).
  • Actively participate in the development and performance of assigned group tasks.
  • Perform required unit production quality control checks and analysis.
  • Ensure that operations are within environmental permitting requirements.
  • Perform required preventative maintenance and assist in troubleshooting potential issues and give assistance to others when unit problems occur. Making sure to document efforts in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with engineers, maintenance technicians and other team members to assist in identifying maintenance issues and planning and scheduling maintenance activities.
  • Properly use personal computers for meeting daily performance expectations and accessing plant and unit information and procedures.
  • Actively assume personal accountability for meeting Shell’s standards of continuous personal and professional development.
  • Participate in training and respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Actively complying with all operating policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring that workstations and the work location is clean and free of hazards.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
