Welcome to 2009 Graduation

This year’s graduation ceremony will be held on May 22, 2009 at 6:30 pm in the new LMC Football Stadium.  Students should plan to arrive no later than 6:00 pm to line up at the area adjacent to the men’s locker room by the P.E. Annex.  Students will need to check in to receive a card which will contain their name and major to be read during the ceremony.

Because graduation is held in the football stadium, there is no limit to the number of guests you may invite.  There is no reserved seating at the stadium.  The stadium bleachers have wheelchair access; chairs will also be placed below the bleachers for additional seating and accessibility.

***May 19, 2009***

If you applied for 2009 graduation and have not yet received your letter or a phone call, please contact Admissions & Records at (925) 439-2181 ext. 7500. You need to pick up your cap and gown package no later than 3:00 pm on Friday, May 22, 2009.

PLEASE NOTE:      The new football stadium track has a new texture which means we need to take a few precautions to preserve the surface and for a safe experience for faculty, staff and students.  Because of the new texture on the field and track, no high heeled shoes or chewing gum will be allowed in the stadium.  If you wear high heeled shoes, you will be asked to remove your shoes.  They will damage the track.

Students who have applied for graduation will receive a letter from Admissions & Records once their status has been approved.

Parking:

Please allow time for parking before the ceremony begins. Free parking is available in Lot A, along the perimeter road or in lot B.  Visitors who have difficulty accessing the football stadium from the front parking lots may be dropped off in a designated area in Lot B, adjacent to the stadium.

Student Cap and Gowns:

All graduates will wear caps and gowns, except graduates of the nursing program, who may choose to wear their uniforms instead.  Cap, gown and tassel can be purchased in the bookstore for $15.30.  Once the bookstore has the name of the student, students may purchase their gown package.  When you receive your letter, the bookstore will have your name.  Generic announcements can also be purchased to send to family and friends.  The bookstore also carries LMC gift items.  Bookstore hours are:

Monday - Thursday 7:45 am - 7:00 pm
Friday 7:45 am - 3:00 pm

Honors Student Recognition:

Students who have earned a 3.5 or higher in course work completed prior to Spring 2009 will carry honors designation and are eligible to purchase a gold honors tassel at the cost of $4.30 each.  Please be advised that your grade point average for graduation is calculated using all of your college level grade points, including other college transcripts that have been sent to LMC.  The bookstore will have the list of eligible students.

Photos:

A commercial photographer will be available to photograph each graduate as the College President congratulates you.  You will receive information regarding purchase of your pictures from the photographer.

If you have any additional questions, you may contact Admissions & Records at (925) 439-2181, ext. 7500.

THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR 2008 GRADUATION:

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 is the deadline to petition for graduation in the 2008-2009 year. All graduates who intend to participate in the graduation ceremony and have their names acknowledged in the graduation program must submit a graduation petition by the deadline date. For those applications received after the deadline, there is no guarantee that they will be processed in time for program printing or participation in the graduation ceremony.

WHEN TO APPLY:

You should apply for graduation only if you plan to complete requirements for an Associate in Arts Degree, an Associate in Science Degree, or a Certificate of Achievement by the end of the spring term. You should have already reviewed your academic record with a counselor. Applications for graduation are available online and at the Admissions & Records Office through Wednesday, April 15, 2009. You will be notified by mail regarding the status of your petition.

STUDENTS THAT ARE “APPROVED PENDING”:

Receiving a response to your petition is not a confirmation of the award. Awards are confirmed or denied after the spring semester grades have been verified on student records. This process is usually finalized by mid-July.

TRANSCRIPTS FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS:

Official copies of transcripts from other institutions must be received in the Admissions Office no later than Wednesday, April 15, 2009, the deadline for petitioning for graduation. If you will be enrolled in another institution during the spring semester, you will need to provide proof of enrollment by Wednesday, April 15, 2009 and request an official copy of the other school’s transcript after spring semester grades are posted. All units recorded on transcripts from other colleges are factored in with Los Medanos College units for a total GPA at graduation.

WHEN TO EXPECT THE DIPLOMA:

Your diploma will be mailed to the address listed on your graduation petition in early August.

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

In order to receive an Associate Degree or a Certificate of Achievement, the student must meet the college competency requirements in mathematics, reading, writing and computer literacy (refer to the college catalog section on “Degrees and Awards”).

CATALOG RIGHTS:

Students have the right to graduate under the terms of any of the catalogs that are published while in continuous enrollment prior to eligibility for graduation. Continuous enrollment is defined as the period of time in which a student’s record reflects completion of at least one course, for one semester or term during a given catalog (academic) year, from the time of original enrollment. A student who has a break in attendance must use the catalog that is in effect at the time of readmission.

AA/AS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

Students must complete the AA/AS degree requirements, along with the requirements in a defined major for a minimum total of 60 units (all the units must be degree applicable). Of the total units completed, 12 units must be at LMC, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. All units recorded on transcripts from other colleges are factored in with Los Medanos College units for a total GPA at graduation.

IMPORTANT: If you are applying for a transfer AA/AS path you must submit a letter of acceptance for admission by an accredited transfer institution.

CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT REQUIREMENTS:

The student must complete the requirements defined in the Major section, including completion of competency requirements, 12 units in residency, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (all units must be degree applicable).

HONORS DESIGNATION AT GRADUATION:

A student who earns a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the end of Fall 2008 will earn honors designation for graduation. Units from transcripts submitted from other institutions will be combined with LMC units for this calculation.
