Computer Competency Requirements

Computer competency is required to earn an Associate Degree or a Certificate or Achievement. This requirement may be satisfied in any one of the following ways:

  • Complete with a "C" grade or better:
    • COMSC 010: Introduction to Computer Networking
    • COMSC 011: Introduction to Network Operating Systems
    • COMSC 040: Introduction to Computers
    • COMSC 049: Computer Literacy
    • COMSC 060: Information Technologies
    • COMSC 091: PC Repair - Software
    • BUS 018: Microsoft Excel
    • BUS 035: Microsoft Office
    • BUS 065: Introduction to Word Processing

                 -OR-

  • Complete a course more advanced than those above with a “C” grade or better and file an appeal form in the Admissions Office (contingent on department approval). 

                 -OR-

  • Achieve a score of 84 or above on the Computer Competency Exam.

About the Exam:

The Computer Competency exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions.  A passing score is 84 or more correct (70%).  No grade or units are received; exam results are valid at LMC only.

The exam focuses on the technical aspects of computers and is equivalent to a final exam on the book New Perspectives Computer Concepts 2012 Comprehensive Edition. This book can be checked out from the Drop-in Lab or from the LMC Library.  Students are strongly advised to study the book before attempting the exam.  The exam may be attempted twice. 

On the day of the exam, students should not bring any personal items such as backpacks, books, phones, etc.
