LMC Fire Technology classes are now being offered at two locations in the county – Los Medanos College and the LMC Brentwood Center.
Los Medanos College offers three programs to aid those pursuing or working in fire service careers. The first consists of six semester-long classes leading to a fire technology certificate or degree, the second is a State accredited Firefighter I Academy and the third consists of advanced fire officer training leading to California State Fire Marshal Fire Officer certification. The programs are designed to provide educational opportunities for persons who are seeking employment or advancement in public or private fire protection agencies as well as persons who are pursuing a higher degree in fire administration or fire protection engineering. A Certificate of Achievement may be earned by completing the required Fire Technology courses listed below in addition to completion of competency requirements with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. An Associate in Science Degree may be earned by completion of the 21 units of required Fire Technology courses listed below plus College Associate Degree requirements. These courses may also be used to satisfy the 9 fire technology units plus EMT that are required prerequisites for entry into the LMC Firefighter I Academy.
Accredited by the California State Fire Marshal's Office. The Fire Academy program is designed to introduce, update, or improve job skills for persons engaged in fire protection careers. The Firefighter I Academy program leads to a Certificate of Completion. A certificate may be earned by completion of competency requirements and 30 units of any combination of Fire Technology and Fire Academy courses with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. The Fire Fighter 1 Academy is offered in cooperation with Contra Costa County Fire Protection Training Center and the City of Richmond Fire Department. Please call the Fire/EMS at 439-2181 x 3274 for information about the orientation and registration process. IMPORTANT: Proof of successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), or the equivalent must be submitted prior to the beginning of the 2009 Firefighter I Academy. Any request for accommodations in a training program or for off-campus training should be referred to a DSPS counselor. Students should keep in mind that the individual institutions that host the College’s training programs may have their own rules and regulations that must be followed, and not all accommodations requested may be feasible, permissible, or reasonable. Therefore, DSPS will work together with the students, the instructor, and the on- or off-site training program to determine the appropriate accommodations and facilitate in implementing those accommodations. PLEASE NOTE: Due to a recent State budget decision, California Community College enrollment fees have been increased from $20 to $26 per unit effective for the Fall 2009 term. Students who have qualified for and received approval for the Board of Governors fee waiver will have their full enrollment fee waived and no further action is necessary on their part. Students who have already submitted fees at the $20 per unit rate will be required to submit payment for the difference. Payments can continue to be made on WebAdvisor, TREG, and in-person at the college.
