2008 Graduation Ceremony

Date/Time: Friday, May 23, 2008; the processional will begin at 6:30 pm

Location: Los Medanos College Football Stadium

Parking: Front parking lots A, 1A, and 2A; parking along the perimeter road leading to the back of campus; parking also available in Lot B and gravel overflow area. View map for details.

LMC Police Services staff will provide rides from the front parking lots to the football stadium upon request.

Visitor Drop-Off Zone:

Visitors who have difficulty accessing the football stadium from the front parking lots may be dropped off in a designated area in Lot B, adjacent to the stadium.

Visitor Seating:

For the best view of ceremony, seats are available in the bleachers on the west side of the stadium. Chairs will also be available on the track for those who have difficulty negotiating the stairs or walkway to the bleachers. Tickets are not required and there are no restrictions on the number of guests who may attend.

Shoe and Clothing Recommendations :

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for both visitors and graduates. A light jacket or warm sweater may also be needed for visitors, given the afternoon winds and cool evenings we often experience at this time of the year.

Instructions for Graduation Ceremony :

Prior to the ceremony, you will receive a copy of the “Ceremony Instructions for Graduates” and a map with details about the processional in the mail. Additionally, participants will receive a 3 x 5 card showing your name, address, major, and the type of award you will be receiving. Be sure to bring this card to the ceremony to give to the faculty announcer as you are recognized in front of the stage.

Carefully read the outline of what is expected of you and if you have any questions contact the Admissions & Records Office (925) 439-2181, ext. 7500. There will be no rehearsal prior to the ceremony.

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes for the ceremony. You will be lining up on the northeast end of the football stadium, beginning at 6:00 pm to review instructions for the processional. The graduation march will begin promptly at 6:30 pm.

Graduation Photos:

A commercial photographer will take pictures of all graduates during the ceremony. You will have the opportunity to purchase pictures after reviewing proofs that will be sent to your home.

Graduation Speaker:

One student will be selected to briefly address the graduating class and guests attending the ceremony. For details and an application for the student speaker selection, contact the Admissions & Records Office by calling, (925) 439-2181, extension 7500. Applications will be accepted through Friday, May 2 and the selection committee will meet with candidates on Thursday, May 8, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, in L-106 (Library Conference Room). Individual appointment times will be sent to applicants.

Caps & Gowns:

Caps and gowns will be available from the College Bookstore Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 23.

Eligibility for Graduation

Submit a petition for graduation by Friday, April 11, 2008:

Download and submit a petition for graduation. All students who intend to participate in the graduation ceremony and have their name listed in the graduation program must submit a graduation petition by the April 11 deadline. Late petitions will be accepted, but with no assurance of participation in the ceremony or listing in the graduation program.

Students who are "approved pending":

Receiving a response to your petition is not a confirmation of the award.  Awards are confirmed or denied after spring semester grades have been verified on student records.  This process is usually finalized by mid-July.

Transcripts from other institutions:

Official copies of transcripts from other institutions must be received in the Admissions Office no later than Friday April 11, the deadline for petitioning for graduation.  If you will be enrolled in another institution during the Spring semester, you will need to provide proof of enrollment by Friday April 11, and request an official copy of the other school's transcript after spring semester grades are posted.  REMINDER: All units recorded on transcripts from other colleges are factored in with Los Medanos College units for a total GPA at graduation.

When to expect your diploma:

By early August, your diploma will be mailed to you at the address you have listed on your petition for graduation.

Competency requirements:

In order to receive an Associate degree or a Certificate of Achievement the student must meet the college competency requirements in mathematics, reading, writing and computer literacy, (refer to the college catalog section on "Graduation Requirements").

Catalog rights:

Students who enroll in at least one course for one semester/session in each catalog year from the time of original enrollment at Los Medanos College have the right to graduate under the terms of any of the catalogs published during the period of the student's continuous enrollment preceding their eligibility for graduation.  Please indicate in the petition which catalog year you are going by.   For students not continuously enrolled, requirements for graduation are those defined in the catalog upon their return (or last return, if multiple breaks) to Los Medanos College.

AA/AS degree requirements:

Students must complete the AA/AS degree requirements, along with the requirements in a defined major (if other than Liberal Arts) for a minimum total of 60 units (all the units must be degree applicable).  Of the total units completed, 12 units must be at LMC, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.  REMINDER:  All college transcripts submitted will be included in the calculation with Los Medanos College units for GPA at graduation.

IMPORTANT: If you are applying for a Transfer AA/AS Path you must submit a letter of evidence of acceptance for admission by an accredited transfer institution.

Certificate of Achievement requirements:

The student must complete the requirements defined in the Major section, including completion of competency requirements, 12 units in residency, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (all units must be degree applicable).

Honors Designation at Graduation:

A 3.5 GPA earned by the end of Fall 2007 qualifies the student for Honors designation for graduation.  The GPA calculation includes all courses on transcripts submitted to Los Medanos College in addition to Los Medanos courses.

  • Did not complete the competency requirements.
  • Did not make-up Incomplete from past semester.
